The Turkish Language Association was founded on 12 July 1932 on Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's initiative as the Society for the Study of the Turkish Language, and the First Turkish Language Congress met that September.

It worked intensively to simplify Turkish and find Turkish equivalents for words of Arabic and Persian origin, producing the Güncel Türkçe Sözlük, a spelling guide and historical dictionaries. Since 1983 it has been part of the Atatürk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History.

The association also attaches great importance to Turkic-world projects, publishing a comparative dictionary of Turkic languages and grammars of Turkic languages.
