The Union of Turkic World Municipalities was founded on 12 November 2003 for cooperation between local governments in countries where Turkic languages and dialects are spoken. It is based in Istanbul.

It has more than a thousand member municipalities from about thirty countries, with Azerbaijani municipalities forming the largest group.

The Union organises exchanges of experience in urban planning, transport, water and waste management, training for municipal staff and joint projects between twin cities.
