The Turkish Space Agency (TUA) was founded in December 2018. The National Space Programme announced in 2021 sets goals including a lunar mission, a domestic rocket, a spaceport and astronaut training.

On 18 January 2024 air force pilot Alper Gezeravcı flew to the International Space Station on Axiom Space's Ax-3 mission and spent about two weeks conducting experiments — the first Turkish astronaut.

On 8 June 2024 the second Turkish astronaut, Tuva Cihangir Atasever, reached space on a Virgin Galactic suborbital flight. Work is also under way on a domestic lunar lander.
