Tush kyiz

A large embroidered hanging for the yurt wall, sewn over years by women for their children's weddings.

Tush kyiz means "wall felt" in Kyrgyz: a large embroidery in silk and wool thread on velvet or cloth that a mother makes to commemorate the wedding of a son or daughter.

The designs show flowers, plants, animals, stylised horns and emblems of Kyrgyz rural life; the maker sometimes dates and signs the finished work, which can take years.

Hung on the yurt wall behind the bed, it symbolises the family's wealth and women's labour. Kazakhs know it as tus kiiz.
