Khojaly genocide (1992)
The mass killing of the civilian population of Khojaly on the night of 25–26 February 1992; according to official figures 613 people were killed.
Khojaly was an Azerbaijani town in Karabakh, near Khankendi. Besieged in February 1992, it was attacked by Armenian armed forces on the night of 25–26 February.
Civilians trying to flee were mercilessly killed on the way. According to Azerbaijan's official figures 613 people were killed, including 106 women and 63 children, and 1,275 were taken captive.
Azerbaijan recognises the massacre as genocide, and 26 February is commemorated every year as Khojaly Genocide Day. Parliaments and bodies in a number of countries have also recognised it as a massacre or genocide.
