Yangykala Canyon

A canyon of red and white cliffs in Balkan Region whose name means "fiery fortresses" in Turkmen.

The canyon lies about 160 km east of Türkmenbaşy, with cliffs 60 to 100 metres high; locals also call it Gyzyl Dag, "Red Mountains".

Its floor was once flooded by the Garabogazköl gulf. After the sea retreated, wind and rain carved the sedimentary rock into walls striped red, pink, white and orange.

At sunrise and sunset the rocks glow like flame — hence the name — and the canyon can only be reached by off-road vehicle.
