On 25 October 1990 the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR adopted the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of the Kazakh SSR. It proclaimed the supremacy of the republic's laws on its territory, its ownership of natural resources and its right to an independent foreign policy.

The sovereignty declaration laid the groundwork for the independence law adopted a year later, on 16 December 1991. Republic Day was the main state holiday from 1995 to 2009, and in 2022, on the initiative of the President of Kazakhstan, it regained the status of a national holiday.

The holiday

25 October is celebrated in Kazakhstan as Republic Day and is a day off. State awards are presented, towns hold concerts, exhibitions and folk festivities, and buildings are decked with the blue-and-gold flag.
