Islam in Azerbaijan

Islam, spreading since the 7th century, is the faith of the great majority; Azerbaijan is a secular, tolerant state.

Islam reached Azerbaijan in the 7th century under the Arab Caliphate and in later centuries became the main faith. Today the great majority are Muslims; Shia and Sunni believers live side by side and often pray in the same mosque.

Under the Constitution religion is separate from the state. Azerbaijan is known for its tradition of multiculturalism: Christian and Jewish places of worship and ancient Jewish settlements such as Red Village in Guba are preserved. The tradition of Iftar became UNESCO heritage in 2023 on a joint nomination by Azerbaijan, Iran, Türkiye and Uzbekistan.
