Budapest is Hungary's largest city, with 1.7 million people; it was formed in 1873 by uniting Buda and Óbuda on the right bank of the Danube with Pest on the left.

The Parliament on the river, Buda Castle, the Chain Bridge and Heroes' Square are its symbols, and the Danube banks and the Buda Castle Quarter are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From 1541 to 1686 Buda was the seat of the Ottoman province of Budin; the tomb of Gül Baba and Turkish baths such as Rudas and Király survive from that era, and the baths still in use have made Budapest a "city of baths".
