Bursa lies at the foot of Uludağ. Orhan Gazi took the city in 1326, and it became the first capital of the Ottoman state; the tombs of Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi are here.

The city's best-known monument is the twenty-domed Grand Mosque (1396–1399). For centuries Bursa was a centre of the silk trade, and the Koza Han is still a silk market. İskender kebab and candied chestnuts are also associated with Bursa.

The nearby village of Cumalıkızık preserves early Ottoman rural life, with cobbled lanes and timber-and-mudbrick houses. The village and the historic parts of Bursa were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014.
