Duzdag lies 10–12 km north-west of the city of Nakhchivan, in the Kangarli district. Salt has been mined here since ancient times: excavations in 1967 showed that the mine was already worked in the 3rd–2nd millennia BC.

In 1979 a physiotherapy centre opened at Duzdag. Treatment takes place in salt chambers about 110 metres underground: the clean, salt-saturated air makes breathing easier, especially for bronchial asthma and bronchitis. The method is called speleotherapy.

Today the centre has a comfortable hotel above ground and special wards for patients below. Duzdag is one of Nakhchivan's best-known places for treatment.
