The date of Kantara Castle's construction is unknown, the most plausible theory being the Byzantine period; its architecture combines Byzantine and Frankish elements.

Perched on a high crag at the eastern end of the Kyrenia Mountains, it overlooks both the north and south coasts and the Karpas Peninsula.

It fell derelict in the 16th century and was dismantled in 1560; the nearby Kantara Monastery takes its name from it, and today the castle is a place for quiet walks in nature.
