Karnay and surnay

The sound of festivals and weddings: the long brass karnay trumpet and the double-reed surnay.

The karnay is a brass trumpet two to three metres long that plays only one or two notes; in the past it was used for military signals and announcements from city gates.

The surnay is a loud double-reed wind instrument related to the Azerbaijani zurna. Together the karnay's blast, the surnay's melody and the doira's rhythm open weddings and festivals.

To this day weddings, circumcision feasts, Navruz and other celebrations in Uzbekistan begin with karnay and surnay, whose sound carries for kilometres.
