Services — the public sector, trade, tourism and education — dominate the economy of Northern Cyprus, with smaller industrial and agricultural sectors. It uses the Turkish lira, tying its economy closely to Türkiye's.

Tourism is concentrated on the coasts of Kyrenia and Famagusta, where hotels, casinos, historic sites and beaches draw visitors from Türkiye and Europe every year.

In recent decades higher education has become one of its most important sectors: tens of thousands of students from Türkiye, Africa and Asia study at universities in Nicosia, Famagusta and Kyrenia, the largest being Near East University in Nicosia.
