Kurmanbek Bakiyev

Kyrgyzstan's second president (b. 1949), elected in 2005 and ousted by protests in April 2010.

An engineer, Kurmanbek Bakiyev was prime minister in 2000–2002. After Akayev's fall in March 2005 he was appointed interim leader and was elected president that July.

Re-elected in 2009, he was driven from power by protests that began in Bishkek in April 2010 and left the country; he lives in Belarus.
