Himnusz — the national anthem of Hungary
Words by Ferenc Kölcsey (1823), music by Ferenc Erkel (1844).
The words were written by the poet Ferenc Kölcsey in 1823, and the official setting was composed by the Romantic composer Ferenc Erkel in 1844.
Subtitled "From the stormy centuries of the Hungarian people", the poem recalls the nation's past suffering and asks God's blessing; the subtitle is thought to have helped it pass Habsburg censorship.
22 January, the day Kölcsey completed the poem, is celebrated in Hungary as Hungarian Culture Day.
