Syrian Turkmen
Oghuz Turks of northern Syria, living around Aleppo and Bayırbucak. They have lived in these lands since Seljuk and Ottoman times.
Syrian Turkmen are a Turkic people of the Oghuz branch. Their settlement in the region began with the Seljuk campaigns of the 11th century and continued under the Ottomans. Their main areas are around Aleppo, the Bayırbucak mountains north of Latakia, Homs, Hama and Damascus.
Estimates of their number range from 250,000 to over a million, because many urban Turkmen have become Arabised while rural Turkmen have kept their language.
