Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin

The settlement of the Carpathian Basin by the Magyar tribes, coming from the steppes under Árpád at the end of the 9th century.

The Hungarians first lived on the Black Sea and Caspian steppes in close contact with Turkic peoples, especially the Khazar Khaganate; the Kabar tribes, rebels from the Khazars, joined them.

At the end of the 9th century the Magyar tribes, led by Árpád, crossed the Carpathians and settled the Danube basin — the honfoglalás, or "conquest of the homeland" — and Árpád is popularly called the founder of the country.

Hungarian horsemen were renowned for mounted archery like other steppe peoples, a nomadic legacy that lives on in Hungary's mounted archery and the Kurultáj.
