Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman is paying a state visit to Kazakhstan on 5–6 October at the invitation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev — the first visit by an Omani head of state to Kazakhstan and to Central Asia as a whole. An official welcome ceremony was held at the Palace of Independence in Astana on 6 October, followed by talks between the two leaders.

After the talks eight documents were signed: agreements on investment promotion and mutual protection and on air services, a joint investment fund of Samruk-Kazyna and the Oman Investment Authority, financial-sector cooperation, a Kazakhstan–Oman Business Council, strategic cooperation in geological exploration between KazMunayGas and OQ Exploration, the joint Blue City Rixos project, and a presence for the Eurasian Development Bank in Oman.

Tokayev called the visit "a historic event" and awarded the Sultan the Altyn Qyran Order, Kazakhstan's highest honour. The Sultan in turn presented Tokayev with Oman's highest state decoration, the Order of Al Said, and invited him to visit Oman.

Transport and logistics are among the most promising areas: the sides are discussing shipping Kazakh grain to world markets through Omani ports and a multimodal corridor linking Kazakhstan's rail and road networks to Oman's ports. The two countries established diplomatic relations in April 1992.
