The 46th Chess Olympiad was held in Samarkand from 15 to 27 September. Hosts Uzbekistan won the Open section, beating Ukraine 2.5-1.5 in the final round to finish on 20 of 22 match points — their second title after 2022.

India took silver and Germany bronze. China won the Women's section, with Kazakhstan taking silver. Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov had the highest performance rating of the Open event.

The Olympiad brought together 1,961 players from more than 200 nations, and at the FIDE Congress held alongside it Kazakhstan's Timur Turlov was elected FIDE president.
