The Turkmen carpet is among the most famous in the world: the repeated gul medallions on a deep red ground are the signature of each tribe, and the guls of the five main tribes appear on Turkmenistan's state flag. In 2019 Turkmen carpet making was inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage.
Since 1992 Turkmen Carpet Day has been celebrated every year on the last Sunday of May. The Carpet Museum in Ashgabat holds one of the world's largest hand-woven carpets.
