Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the fast kept during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and begins on the first day of Shawwal. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the festival moves about 11 days earlier every year and passes through all the seasons over 33 years.

It is a public holiday by law in Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan (Oraza Baýramy), Kyrgyzstan (Orozo Ait), Uzbekistan (Ramazon Hayiti) and the TRNC. The exact date is announced each year by the government on the basis of religious authorities' calculations.

How it is marked

The day begins with the festival prayer; alms are given, elders are visited, children receive sweets and pocket money, and families gather around one table. In Türkiye the festival is also popularly called the Sugar Feast (Şeker Bayramı).
