Religion in Hungary
In the 2022 census 29.2% identified as Catholic and 9.8% as Calvinist; Islamic monuments survive from the Ottoman period.
The Hungarians adopted Christianity around 1000 under Stephen I. In the 2022 census 29.2% identified as Catholic, 9.8% as Calvinist (Reformed) and 1.8% as Lutheran, while 40% did not answer and 16.1% said they were not religious.
In the Ottoman period many mosques, tombs and dervish lodges were built in central and southern Hungary; the tomb of Gül Baba in Budapest is still a Muslim pilgrimage site, while the Mosque of Pasha Qasim in Pécs later became a church.
Today there are small Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist communities, and some Hungarians feel close to Tengrism, the ancient Turkic faith.
