The castle sits on a rocky summit of the Kyrenia Mountains, commanding the mountain road from Kyrenia to Nicosia, and is the best preserved of the range's three strongholds — St Hilarion, Kantara and Buffavento.

A monastery and watchtower stood here in Byzantine times, and under the Lusignan kings it became a palace whose towers and walls cling to the crags like a fairy-tale castle.

Its upper ward offers breathtaking views over Kyrenia and the Mediterranean, and stories say it inspired the castle in Disney's Snow White.
