Uzbekistan adopts a law improving its Latin-based Uzbek alphabet on Uzbek Language Day

On October 21, Uzbek Language Day, Uzbekistan's President signed a law improving the Latin-based Uzbek alphabet. Saida Mirziyoyeva, head of the Presidential Administration, announced the move and called it historically significant. She first proposed refining the alphabet on December 11, 2023, at a conference on the Jadid legacy.
Officials say the update is meant to fix shortcomings in the current writing system, strengthen Uzbek in digital spaces and support young people's literacy.
The transition will be gradual: existing documents, the national currency and securities remain valid, while textbooks, signs and road signs will be replaced step by step as they reach the end of their service life.
