Tatarstan to restore the gravestone of Shigabutdin Marjani's parents, whose village madrasa was known across the Volga region

Emergency conservation work is planned for the shared gravestone of the parents of the Tatar enlightener and theologian Shigabutdin Marjani in the village cemetery of Tashkichu, Arsk District, Tatarstan. The Tatarstan Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage has issued the permit, and the stone is classed as a cultural heritage object of regional significance.
The plan is to dismantle and clean the stone, remove rust and apply a biocide, glue the broken fragments together, build a new plinth and foundation, and then return the monument to its place.
Marjani's father, Bakhautdin ibn Subkhan (1787–1856), graduated from the Tursuniya madrasa in Bukhara, settled in Tashkichu and revived the village madrasa, which became known across the Volga and Ural regions; many of its graduates became prominent scholars. His mother, Bibikhabiba (1795–1823), died after the birth of her second child, having borne Shigabutdin first. After his father's death, Marjani set up a shared gravestone of grey limestone and carved both parents' names and an Arabic epitaph on it in Kufic script.
