Freestyle skiing includes several events: moguls (a run down a bumpy slope with two jumps), aerials (somersaults off a kicker), ski cross (four skiers racing on an obstacle course), halfpipe, slopestyle and big air.

History

Freestyle grew out of "hot-dog" skiing shows in the USA and Europe in the 1960s and 1970s. Moguls joined the Olympic programme in 1992, aerials in 1994, ski cross in 2010, and halfpipe and slopestyle in 2014.

Major competitions

The Olympic Games, the FIS Freestyle World Championships, the World Cup and the X Games.

Freestyle in the Turkic world

Tashkent-born Lina Cheryazova became Olympic aerials champion at Lillehammer in 1994 — the first Olympic gold in the history of independent Uzbekistan. Kazakhstan's Yulia Galysheva won moguls bronze at PyeongChang 2018 and three medals at world championships.
