Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to visit Türkiye on October 21–23, with a strategic partnership declaration and energy and defence cooperation expected

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will make an official visit to Türkiye on October 21–23. Canada's ambassador in Ankara, Marcel Lebleu, told Anadolu Agency that it is the first official visit to Türkiye by a Canadian head of government. Carney will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Energy Minister Tim Hodgson and the head of Export Development Canada.
The ambassador called the visit “the beginning of a new strategic relationship”. The leaders are expected to issue a joint declaration launching a strategic partnership, backed by an action plan. The agenda includes energy supply, nuclear cooperation, sustainable mining and the defence industry, with Canada offering natural gas.
He added that free trade negotiations are due to begin in November, an air transport agreement will be signed, and Export Development Canada will sign a cooperation agreement with Türk Eximbank. Weekly flights between the two countries have risen to 21, and Air Transat launches Montreal–Istanbul service on October 29. About 200 Canadian delegates are expected at the COP31 conference in Antalya in November.
