National Flag Day
On 9 November 1918 the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic adopted the blue, red and green flag with a crescent and eight-pointed star.

Azerbaijan's tricolour was adopted as the state flag by the government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on 9 November 1918. Blue stands for Turkic identity, red for modernity and progress, green for Islamic civilisation, and the crescent and eight-pointed star for Turkic-Islamic unity.
Banned in Soviet times, the flag was readopted as the state flag in November 1990 in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on the initiative of Heydar Aliyev, and on 5 February 1991 for the whole of Azerbaijan.
State Flag Square
A decree by President Ilham Aliyev of 17 November 2009 declared 9 November State Flag Day. The State Flag Square, which also houses a Flag Museum, opened in Baku in 2010, and a Flag Square opened in Shusha in 2021. On this day flags are raised and celebrations held across the country.
