Remembrance Day
The day honours the martyrs of the 44-day Patriotic War, which began on 27 September 2020.
The 44-day Patriotic War began on 27 September 2020. The Azerbaijani Army liberated more than 300 towns and villages in Karabakh, including Shusha, and the war ended on 10 November with Azerbaijan's historic victory.
More than 2,900 of Azerbaijan's sons gave their lives for this victory. A decree by President Ilham Aliyev of 2 December 2020 declared 27 September Remembrance Day in memory of those who died in the Patriotic War.
How the day is marked
At 12:00 the whole country observes a minute of silence for the martyrs. People visit martyrs' cemeteries and Victory Park in Baku and pay tribute to the families of the fallen; the day is remembered with pride and gratitude as the start of the road to victory.
