April 16· Anniversary
Holocaust Memorial Day
Since 2001 Hungary has remembered the victims of the Holocaust on this date, linked to the creation of the first ghettos in 1944.

Since 2001, 16 April has been Holocaust Memorial Day in Hungary. The date marks the creation of the first ghettos in the country in April 1944.
Within a few months in 1944 about 600,000 Hungarian Jews were killed, most of them deported to Auschwitz. The iron shoes on the Danube bank and the Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest keep the memory of this tragedy alive.
Remembrance
Schools hold history lessons, commemorations take place at the Holocaust Memorial Center and in synagogues, and a March of the Living is held.
