February 25· Anniversary
Memorial Day for the Victims of Communism
A memorial day established by the Hungarian Parliament in 2000 to remember those persecuted under the communist regime.

By a resolution of the Hungarian Parliament, 25 February has been the Memorial Day for the Victims of Communism since 2000. The date recalls the arrest on 25 February 1947 of Béla Kovács, general secretary of the Smallholders' Party, by Soviet military authorities and his deportation to Siberia.
Under the communist regime hundreds of thousands of Hungarians were imprisoned, deported or sent to forced-labour camps. The House of Terror museum on Budapest's Andrássy Avenue is dedicated to the victims of that era.
Remembrance
Commemorations are held in Parliament and in schools, and flowers and candles are laid at memorials.
