Eid al-Adha begins on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar, the festival day of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Animals are sacrificed in memory of the Prophet Abraham's devotion to God, and the meat is shared among the poor, neighbours and relatives. The festival moves about 11 days earlier each year.

Eid al-Adha is a public holiday by law in Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan (Gurban Baýramy), Kazakhstan (Kurban Ait), Kyrgyzstan (Kurman Ait), Uzbekistan (Qurbon Hayiti) and the TRNC — a festival shared by seven of the eight Turkic states.

How it is marked

The day begins with the festival prayer; sacrifices are made and meat distributed, and the graves of martyrs and loved ones are visited. It is a festival of solidarity and compassion: no family's table should be left empty.
