On 31 August 1991 the Supreme Soviet of Kyrgyzstan adopted the Declaration of State Independence of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, and the Kyrgyz people gained the independent statehood they had longed for over centuries.
The symbol of independent Kyrgyzstan is its red flag: the golden sun with 40 rays represents the forty heroes of the Manas epic and the forty Kyrgyz tribes, while the tunduk inside it — the crown ring of a yurt — stands for the family home and the unity of the people. Ala-Too Square in Bishkek is the country's main square.
The main holiday
Independence Day is Kyrgyzstan's main state holiday, with a military parade and festivities on Ala-Too Square, horseback games such as kok-boru and horse races, concerts and fireworks.
