State Language Day
On 23 September 1989 the Law on the State Language made Kyrgyz the state language.

On 23 September 1989 the Supreme Soviet of Kyrgyzstan adopted the law granting Kyrgyz the status of state language — an important step in preserving the nation's identity. The date has since been celebrated as State Language Day.
Kyrgyz belongs to the Kipchak branch of the Turkic languages. Its greatest monument is the Manas epic, one of the longest epics in the world with more than half a million lines. In the 20th century the works of Chingiz Aitmatov made the Kyrgyz word known worldwide.
How it is marked
Schools and universities hold poetry and public-speaking contests, performances by manaschi reciters and book exhibitions, and teachers and journalists who excel in the state language receive awards.
