On the night of 25–26 February 1992 a mass killing of civilians took place in the town of Khojaly in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to official figures 613 people, including 63 children and 106 women, were killed, hundreds were taken captive and the town was razed.

In 1994 the National Assembly declared 26 February Khojaly Genocide Day. The international "Justice for Khojaly" campaign launched in 2008 made the tragedy known worldwide, and parliaments and cities in a number of countries have formally condemned it.

How the day is marked

Every year on 26 February a large march goes to the memorial in Baku's Khatai district, and remembrance events are held across the country and by diaspora organisations abroad. Khojaly memorials also stand in Berlin, Mexico City, Sarajevo and other cities. Since 2023 Khojaly has again been under Azerbaijani control.
