On 31 August 1991 the Supreme Soviet of Uzbekistan adopted a declaration and law on the state independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and 1 September was proclaimed Independence Day. For the first time since the Timurid era, the Uzbek people had their own independent state.

The blue, white and green flag of Uzbekistan was adopted: blue stands for the sky and water, white for peace, green for nature and abundance, and the crescent and 12 stars for independence and the twelve months of the year. Independence Square in Tashkent and the monument in New Uzbekistan Park, opened in 2021, are symbols of independence.

The main holiday

Independence Day is Uzbekistan's main state holiday, with a grand festive concert in Tashkent and folk festivities, exhibitions and fireworks across the country; the 35th anniversary of independence was celebrated in 2026.
