Since 2001, 31 August has been the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Repression in Uzbekistan, commemorating tens of thousands of people shot, exiled or imprisoned in the political repressions of the Soviet era.

Among the victims were Uzbekistan's most prominent intellectuals — the Jadid reformers Abdulla Qodiriy, Cho'lpon, Abdurauf Fitrat and others. Their works were returned to the people after independence.

Remembrance

A state ceremony is held at the Memory of Martyrs complex in Tashkent, built where victims shot in 1937–1938 were buried: the Quran is recited, alms are given and new documents go on show in the museum.
